Inside Rehlko's Latest Green Initiative: The PEP Ecopassport

The push for sustainability in the data center sector has gained significant momentum, and Rehlko is leading the charge with innovative solutions that address both reliability and environmental responsibility. In a recent interview, Nicole Dierksheide, Global Category Director for Large Power at Rehlko, discusses the latest insights into how the company is transforming the backup power landscape through groundbreaking initiatives, including a useful new certification document.

Rehlko has long been recognized as a leader in backup power for data centers, including a commitment to integrating renewable energy and sustainablepractices into product lines. One of the company’s most significant recent achievements: the introduction of the first Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for the KD Series generator set for mission-critical markets. This declaration, known as the PEP ecopassport, is more than just a document—it represents a comprehensive approach to understanding and reducing the carbon footprint of a generator.

Dierksheide explains the motivation behind this initiative: "Sustainability and understanding the carbon footprint of our product and the use of our product has been a focus for us for many years at Rehlko. We wanted to provide our customers with validated, clearly articulated data so they can make informed decisions without confusion or hidden information."

The PEP ecopassport provides data centers with a transparent view of the carbon impact associated with the manufacturing, operation, and end-of-life phases of a Rehlko KD Series generator, allowing them to make decisions that align with their sustainability goals.

Later, she touches on how Rehlko's generators, including the KD Series, are optimized to run on sustainable fuels like HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), and the company's Conscious Care program, which further reduces the environmental impact of their products. Nicole also shares insights into the potential of hydrogen fuel cells as a future replacement for traditional diesel generators.
